The Murderer

One of the original members of Nightmare's Pantheon. As the only schizophrenic on a team of bloodthirsty terrorists, Dust's reputation has obviously come to far precede him — but ironically, with his moral compass being arguably one of the most socially acceptable on his entire team, his reputation is one of the least accurate. He keeps quiet and to himself whenever possible — for others' sake as well as his own — but unfortunately, his shadowed face and antisocial air do no favors towards his aura of miserable unapproachability. More unfortunately still, the rumors as to his potential danger under Nightmare's command are far from empty, since Dust's twisted sense of "honor" is not nearly enough to stay his hand — whether or not he was actually ordered to strike. His role is typically the hammer of mass destruction; a wide shotgun blast of overpowered magical ability taking out whole city blocks at a time. However, mindless mass destruction is a tool Nightmare needs with surprising infrequency, meaning Dust is more regularly delegated to support roles on "normal" raids... or else left behind to mind his garden & his ghosts.

Origin Point

Dust is from TAU-DuT 1854189147, a world whose Underground developed somewhere in south Korea. Compared to many of his alternates, Dust was something of a recluse from the start, with his role as one of the main physicists behind the development of the CORE performed behind the scenes, and thus out of the public spotlight. Of course, with the monsters of TAU-DuT 1854189147 being about as kind as monsters can come, a quiet, awkward skeleton with a perpetual rattle and a tendency towards disorganization hardly raised an eyebrow, and public opinion on his temperament more-or-less amounted to him being a strange SOUL who'd only speak a solid sentence in praise of his beloved little brother. So when his universe's Catalyst fell into the Underground and began a repeated series of genocide runs, well, nobody was rushing to explain Dust's sudden absence when he hardly left his house in the first place — which is just as well for Dust, who was busy attempting to explain away his inexplicable memory retention between RESETS as the same sort of half-memories and too-real waking dreams he'd been experiencing since his childhood. The true trouble only started when his brother began recounting the same violent false memories that Dust was so adamantly dismissing... finally prompting him to brush off his old degree and quietly look into what was going on.What he found, of course, was not just a timeline in complete disarray — countless too-short ends threatening to unravel the rope in its entirety, and fraying more by the day — but numbers proving it in a way that could be read and re-read into terrible certainty. And quickly followed was the equally terrible realization that whatever this thing was, failing to beat it to the punch would result in something far worse than death; the total annihilation of the universe down to the atomic level. Not seeing any other options, Dust thus began his own series of faux genocide runs, unable to RESET but attempting to kill everyone in the Underground — and take all of their LV — before his "Anomaly" had the chance. Of course, this included his beloved little brother... and with both the half-memories and effects of LV lingering more and more between each consecutive RESET, Dust slowly saw his mental state shuddering and buckling under the strain, until he could no longer tell the difference between a living Snowdin and one full of dusty ghosts of his own SOUL's making. It's not clear how many RESETS Dust went through before he achieved his "goal", but eventually he must have, since Nightmare arrived to find a terrified husk hiding away in the basement of his old home in an empty Underground, begging his long-dead brother to rescue him from the ghosts knocking on the door and draining his LV-induced overproduction of magic the only way he still could — one trembling wound at a time.Luckily for him, Nightmare was all too happy to take over as a remedy in exchange for his service and loyalty... and Dust wasn't going to deny a life raft when finally thrown one.

main ability: overclocked

Dust's call to fame is his impossibly high LV — or more accurately, the way said LV has affected his SOUL, pushing it into a constant state of magic production in preparation for a fight that very rarely actually comes. While Dust's abilities superficially resemble his PRIME counterpart quite strongly, his stamina — as well as the AT behind each individual attack — is completely unmatched, and many of his constructs are supersized to keep up with the strain. Likewise, not only does his LV mean a much higher HP than his sourcecode, but his magic levels force his body to heal much faster than normal, making him less of a glass cannon and more of a regular magical tank.Unfortunately, the side-effects to his health — including the way it compounds with his schizophrenia — are nothing to sneeze at, either. He barely sleeps or eats, and suffers chronic pain due to the stress on his leylines... meaning that, while his raw power is technically unmatched, it's difficult to actually put it to use in a way that doesn't put HIM out of commission for the next 4 business weeks. The only way to keep any of his health issues relatively manageable is to regularly drain his SOUL of magic — something difficult to do under normal circumstances without causing incredible damage to nearby property, and potentially just exacerbating the very issues you were trying to fix.

trivia

  • First language is Korean; also fluent in English and ASL

  • Hates his face being seen by anybody, no matter how close

  • Selectively mute, despite near-constantly air-whispering quiet word-salad. ASL or texting is how he gets around 👌

  • When he does talk, his speech tends to be quiet and monotone; also struggles somewhat to express with his face

  • (Almost) all of his recurring hallucination/delusions revolve around being haunted by Papyrus. It doesn't really hurt anyone and trying to "break him out of it" just causes needless distress, so everyone plays along or redirects it.

  • Has a room in the castle, of course, but spends far more of his time in one of the castle towers; something like an attic

  • He has a garden in the courtyard of Nightmare's castle. It's chock-full of toxic plants that he uses for his little "pet projects"; even standing near it will make you dizzy.

  • Also brews alcohol on the side as a separate project. Aside from being strong enough to kill a horse, it's completely normal alcohol. For some reason, though, nobody drinks it...

  • Almost always rattling; sounds exactly like you think it does

  • Ironically, struggles with some fine motor tasks due to his chronic tremor. (Yes, this does interfere with his hobbies)

  • Secretly keeps a modest collection of trashy romance novels, but since they're all in Korean, nobody knows what they are

  • Has been near-blind on his right side for a few years now; summoning his right eyelight is more trouble than it's worth

  • Really, really loves birds, but doesn't trust himself enough to have one as a pet. His recent favorite are inca doves :)
